‘We Understand…’ – Stefan Borson predicts what Arsenal are really paying for Sterling

Arsenal are likely to be paying around £6million after signing Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea before the transfer window closed.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Chelsea have taken the damage limitation approach after he wasn’t part of Enzo Maresca’s plans at Stamford Bridge.

Sterling joined Arsenal on loan on the final day of the transfer window, but there isn’t a permanent clause included in the deal.

Football Insider revealed on 31 August Mikel Arteta’s side are paying less than half of the 29-year-old’s £350,000-a-week wages.

Sterling was one of several Chelsea players who were exiled from the first-team squad prior to completing his temporary move to the Emirates.

Borson revealed there will be limited resale possibilities for Chelsea next summer once the winger returns to Stamford Bridge following the end of his loan spell.

“It’s one of those needs-must deals,” Borson told Football Insider. 

“We understand he’s on over £300,000 a week and we know Chelsea will continue to pay the vast majority of that.

“A lot of the numbers that have been talked about are about £100,000 a week that is being paid by Arsenal.

“Overall, you are looking at Arsenal getting a player for maybe £6million for a year and then handing him back to Chelsea as a player who is 30 and will be 31 in December 2025.

“Therefore, you would think there will be limited resale possibilities.

“It’s real damage limitation from Chelsea.”
