Report: Newcastle actually submitted a £21m bid for ‘colossal’ defender before Marc Guehi deal
????
Newcastle United endured a really tough summer transfer having missed out on a number of key targets.
The Magpies failed in their attempts to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and missed out on Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga on deadline day.
That followed a really tough end to June when they had to sell highly-rated talents Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to stay in line with Profit and Sustainability regulations.
Eddie Howe has admitted the transfer window unsettled the dressing room but two wins from the first three Premier League games has certainly lifted spirits.
Now, it has just come to light that Newcastle lodged a bid for a defender on the continent before the Guehi deal.
Newcastle submitted £21m bid for Federico Gatti
According to Italian outlet TuttoSport, Newcastle United submitted a £21m bid to sign Juventus centre-back Federico Gatti earlier this summer.
Gatti, a former bricklayer, has enjoyed a rapid rise to elite football and has established himself as one of Italy’s best defenders.
However, when offered the chance to join The Magpies, he rejected it outright and so too did the Turin titans.
Gatti has now cemented himself as a key figure under the newly-appointed Juve boss Thiago Motta, so the chances of reigniting this deal in future windows look slim.
Newcastle should go back in for Marc Guehi in January
Marc Guehi is quite evidently the man who Howe wants, so the club should fully back him and meet Palace’s £75m asking price in Janaury.
Potential sales of Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier could help to facilitate the deal, so chiefs must find suitors in plenty of time.
