Report: Newcastle extensively scouted a striker in 2023 who is now worth £86m
Wow...????
Newcastle United’s recruitment since the Saudi takeover in 2021 has been exceptional.
Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes have perhaps been the pick of the bunch as they’ve established themselves as some of the best players in the Premier League.
Though, despite landing the aforementioned trio, it’s just emerged that despite extensive scouting, they failed to sign a striker who’s now become one of the best in the world.
Newcastle extensively scouted Viktor Gyokeres at Coventry City
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle extensively scouted Viktor Gyokeres during his final season at Coventry City.
That year, Gyokeres netted 22 goals whilst laying on 12 assists and was available for £20.5m in the summer.
However, for whatever reason, Newcastle opted against submitting a bid and he went on to join Sporting, where he has now established himself as one of Europe’s best forwards.
Since arriving in Portugal, the Sweden international has scored 52 times in 58 outings and has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal and Chelsea.
Viktor Gyokeres price tag
Gyokeres now has a valuation of around £86m – so Newcastle chiefs must regret not outlaying a fraction of that in 2023.
His next move is likely to be to one of Europe’s powerhouses, so even if The Magpies were to reignite their interest, they’d have a tough time trying to sign him.
Newcastle are focused on developing young William Osula, anyhow.
