Newcastle United are ready to turn their attention to one Arsenal star if they are unable to agree a fee to sign another target in the summer transfer window.
The Magpies are looking for the signings which will allow them to bounce back from what was a much tougher campaign for Eddie Howe’s men, with Newcastle finishing seventh in the Premier League.
Newcastle are closing in on Lloyd Kelly, and it would appear that one of their next priorities is to sign another goalkeeper to rival Nick Pope at St James’ Park.
Reports have suggested that Newcastle are working on a bid to sign James Trafford from Burnley following the Clarets’ relegation and Vincent Kompany’s departure for Bayern Munich.
Newcastle ready to target Aaron Ramsdale if James Trafford talks break down
Give Me Sport reports that Newcastle believe that they can agree a fee of £20 million to sign Trafford, but Burnley want more for the 21-year-old, particularly as Manchester City will receive a portion of the transfer fee.
Trafford could cost as much as £30 million if Burnley get their way, and that could prompt Newcastle to look elsewhere and target Aaron Ramsdale.
Ramsdale has been linked with Newcastle for some time after the England international lost his place as Arsenal’s number one to David Raya earlier this past season.
Ramsdale was reportedly on course to join Newcastle, but clearly, the Magpies have decided to prioritise a move for Trafford.
Magpies’ choice looks to be a simple one
Arsenal do apparently want £50 million for Ramsdale, but it is a surprise that Newcastle apparently view Trafford as the better option right now.
Much may depend on whether they are looking for a number one or someone who can provide cover for Nick Pope for a little while.
Trafford is clearly not the finished article, having lost his place in the Burnley side during the season. Ramsdale meanwhile, silenced a lot of his doubters after his move to Arsenal.
The ‘outstanding‘ Burnley man clearly has real potential, but there may be plenty of Newcastle fans hoping that talks break down and they are forced to step up their interest in Ramsdale again.
