Report: 'Really strong' player has now given green light for Aston Villa move as deal edges closer

Aston Villa have been pretty busy over the past week or so as negotiations over potential incomings and outgoings continue to take place.

The Villans are said to be in talks with Juventus over a deal that would see Douglas Luiz head to Turin and two players coming to B6.

Villa have reportedly also agreed to sell Tim Iroegbunam to Everton, while talks are said to be ongoing over Toffees forward Lewis Dobbin and Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen.

Now, Italian outlet Calciomercato has provided an update on one of the players involved in the potential Luiz cash-plus-player deal. And it’s good news for the Villans.

Enzo Barrenechea gives green light for Aston Villa move

Calciomercato have reported that Enzo Barrenechea has given the green light for the move to Villa, and Juve are now more confident of getting a deal over the line.

The report reiterates that Juve’s proposal to sign Douglas Luiz is €25million (£21million) plus Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior. Weston McKennie is no longer in the picture.

There have been new contacts between Juventus and Aston Villa, and talks are continuing for the ‘white smoke’ to come soon, added the report.

Calciomercato stressed that the deal must go through in the next 10 days, as Villa need the money before the end of the month for PSR accounting purposes.

Who is Aston Villa target Barrenechea?

Enzo Barrenechea is an Argentine midfielder who can play at No. 6 and No. 8.

The 23-year-old is on Juve’s books, but spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Frosinone, registering 39 appearances, including 36 in Serie A.

Barrenechea began his career at Newell’s Old Boys before moving to Swiss outfit Sion in 2019 and then joining Juve’s academy a year later.

Former Juventus U19 coach Andrea Bonatti told Tuttomercatoweb earlier this year that Barrenechea is a “really strong” player.

“He’s no different from Rodri or (Sergio) Busquets,” he said. “He’s a playmaker and can also play as a midfielder now he is much more complete.

“He can do well in the Juve context, he has the potential for that level, but he will have to confirm what he is doing and it is not easy to repeat himself.”

Barrenechea looks like a top talent and he certainly looks as though he can do well at Aston Villa if he does indeed join.
