Report: Ruben Amorim has made decision on Marcus Rashford's Man Utd future after dropping him against Man City

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim took the bold decision of dropping both Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from his squad to face Manchester City.

The decision taken by Amorim must have raised eyebrows when United’s line-up was released but his stance was vindicated after the Red Devils won 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Amad Diallo’s heroics against Manchester City indicated that Ruben Amorim’s side can function without Rashford in particular.

After Manchester United emerged triumphant in the Manchester Derby, the Portuguese tactician revealed his decision to drop Rashford as well as Garnacho was not due to any “disciplinary” issues.

Amorim said via HaytersTV: “It was not a disciplinary thing. Next week, next game, new life.”

“They are fighting for the places but for me, it is important, the performance in training, the performance in games, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with the teammates, the way you push your teammates, everything is important in our context in the beginning of something when we want to change a lot of things, when people in our clubs are losing their jobs, we have to put our standards really high.”

Ruben Amorim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe agree on Marcus Rashford being sold in January

Amorim added: “And for that, they have to fight for the place in the team and today, the team proved that we can leave anyone outside the squad and we can manage to win if we play together.”

A report by The Guardian has revealed that while a “way back” is expected for Garnacho, Ruben Amorim believes Manchester United should sell Rashford in January.

Amorim feels the Englishman’s sale is necessary to conduct a culture shift at Old Trafford, that will serve a message for football and non-football staff.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe holds the same stance as the former Sporting CP boss as he believes there can be no “passengers” at Manchester United and he feels there has been a decline in the club’s values since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.

The 72-year-old is ready to part ways with Rashford in January if there are clubs who are keen on signing him.

However, selling the high-profile forward will be easier said than done for Manchester United, considering not many clubs across world football will be able to afford his hefty £365,000-a-week wages.

But as things stand, no club has registered their interested in Rashford, with United internally not expecting an exit involving him in January.

The 27-year-old is expected back in training alongside Garnacho next week.

Rashford should heed Man United legend Gary Neville’s advice

Gary Neville’s advice for Rashford was to be determined towards having a top-class season, considering the 2023/2024 campaign was one to forget for him.

“He gets his new contract, everyone feels like Marcus Rashford is going to kick on and play for England in the Euros, he gets left out of the squad, he had a terrible season, the club had a terrible season.”

“Marcus Rashford has got to get back to being the guy who makes those runs in between full-back and centre-back on this side of the pitch and slotting it into that far corner. If he can score 15-20 goals from this left side, Manchester United are going to have a half-decent season.”

However, so far, Rashford has scored just five and assisted two goals respectively in all competitions, having yet another poor season.

Manchester United’s poster-boy must listen to Gary Neville’s advice, return to playing his best football and become an integral member of Ruben Amorim’s side or potentially risk being eventually sold.
