In a move many didn’t see coming, Arsenal have confirmed that Edu Gaspar will leave the club after a successful stint as sporting director alongside Mikel Arteta.
Arteta is now set to lose a person he can call a friend and ally at the club and it remains to be seen who the Gunners look to bring in as Edu’s successor.
Edu was said to be unhappy with a few things behind the scenes and ultimately, this has led to his departure.
Furthermore, TBR Football has also learnt that Edu has been talking to Nottingham Forest’s ownership group for some time about an over-arching role with them.
Of course, for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, all eyes will be on who comes in as replacement and according to GiveMeSport, Arteta will be involved.
Mikel Arteta’s role in Edu’s Arsenal replacement revealed
According to the report from GMS, there are no issues from Arteta when it comes to the team above him now that Edu has left.
Indeed, it’s claimed that Arteta himself will even play a part in helping select who gets to replace Edu.
So far, there is no indication of who that man or woman might be, albeit TBR has suggested three out of work sporting directors who fit the bill.
Still, the fact that Arteta will have a role to play in the process suggests Arsenal are still firmly throwing their weight behind the Spanish coach.
Despite a recent blip, Arsenal very much see their future with Arteta and want to ensure smooth continuity when it comes to Edu’s replacement.
Edu didn’t get everything right at Arsenal
While Edu will be a miss for the Gunners, it is not the end of the world and there are people out there who can replace him and perhaps do even better.
Indeed, Martin Keown has suggested that not every signing worked out for Edu and he does have a point in that claim.
The key for Arsenal now is that they don’t rush the appointment and they ensure they get it spot on.
Failure to do that might just undo the years of work Edu has put in and right now, that’s the last thing Arsenal need.
