Tottenham have unveiled the signing of Dominic Solanke this weekend but things could have been oh so different it seems.
Spurs have spent the summer looking for a new number nine with continued reservations about Richarlison.
Ange Postecoglou has said he wants to keep Richarlison in the last few days but the signing of Solanke for £65m suggests the manager also wanted another option.
However, while Solanke is now officially a Spurs player after being unveiled yesterday, Tottenham also had their eyes on another English striker.
Tottenham considered paying £40m to sign Ivan Toney
According to a report from GiveMeSport, Ivan Toney did indeed feature on Tottenham’s list of targets and a £40m bid was being considered.
It’s claimed that unlike Arsenal, Tottenham saw no issues with the attitude of Toney as they looked to strengthen their ranks.
Toney is still a Brentford player for now but there has been new links suggesting that clubs in Saudi Arabia could come calling for the England man.
Recently lauded as an ‘unbelievable‘ forward by Darren Bent, Toney has had a host of clubs enquire about him.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank has spoken of his desire to keep Toney at the club but with his contract running down, they could well cash in before the window closes.
Tottenham should sell Richarlison and go back for Ivan Toney
While Richarlison doesn’t want to leave, he simply hasn’t delivered for the money and you can bet a lot of Spurs fans would prefer having Solanke and Toney as their options up top.
If they can indeed convince someone to buy Richarlison, then there’s no doubt Tottenham need to go back for Toney.
Indeed, the idea of Solanke doing the pressing and Toney being the foil is something that could work.
Of course, a lot needs to happen for this to take place.
But if there’s a way for Spurs to sign Toney, then they should pursue it.
