Man United are likely to trigger Harry Maguire’s one-year contract extension option, sources have told Football Insider.
His current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 campaign and the defender has confirmed he has held “really positive” talks about his future.
The 31-year-old is currently able to agree a pre-contract with foreign sides in the January transfer window but United are keen to extend his deal and prevent that.
United want to safeguard the defender’s value by activating the option in his existing deal.
Maguire had looked out of favour at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag and came close to being sold to West Ham.
However, new manager Ruben Amorim has pulled a U-turn since his arrival in November – with the Portuguese boss bringing him back into contention.
He has played in each of the last five Premier League fixtures after recovering from a recent muscle injury.
Maguire on course to stay at Man United
Maguire is familiar with a three centre-back system having starred in a similar system with England under Gareth Southgate.
The centre-back has played 14 times across all competitions so far this season, starting in nine of those outings.
He joined Man United in 2019 and has made 220 appearances for the club, winning the FA Cup and League Cup.
A recent injury to Victor Lindelof will only boost Maguire’s chances of being involved under Amorim on a regular basis.
In other news, Tyrell Malacia “will never play for Man United again” after what fans saw.
