Stefan Borson drops verdict on Chelsea agreeing £20m+ shirt sponsor deal

Chelsea are unlikely to agree a £20-25million front-of-shirt sponsorship deal for the remainder of this season.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider there isn’t enough value in the deal for any potential sponsor given that the season is already nearly at the halfway stage.

Chelsea have started the new season without a primary shirt sponsor for the second consecutive campaign after their £40million deal with Infinite Athlete expired over the summer.

Sports business expert Lukasz Baczek reported on 19 December the west London club are in talks with several companies and a deal could be agreed in the next few weeks.

Stamford Bridge chiefs are understood to be expecting a fee in the region of £20-25million.

Chelsea unlikely to receive shirt sponsor valuation

But Borson insisted it’s unlikely Chelsea will be able to agree a deal worth that price at this point in the season.

He told Football Insider: “I will probably embarrass myself by getting this one completely wrong.

“The report says it’s in the next few weeks, so that could be the end of January.

“But let’s say it’s the beginning of January. The sponsor would have for this current season five months of coverage.

“When you are a main sponsor, a lot of the value that you get is in the stadium for the games.

“You get a lot of assets, not only in terms of advertising around the ground but also in terms of seats, boxes and hospitality.

“But by the time you get into January, I think they have only got something like eight home games left.

“Of course, that would already be more than halfway through the season.

“The bottom line is, I don’t believe anybody is paying £4-5million per month to sponsor Chelsea for a stub period.”
