Revealed: Liverpool do due diligence on January midfielder deal

Liverpool will once again scour the market for a new central midfielder in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Money will be available for the Reds in the new year after their quiet summer and strong start to the 2024-25 campaign.

Liverpool lined up a deal for a new midfield star in the summer window but were unable to strike a deal.

Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi was top of the Reds’ shortlist but a deal for the Spain international fell through.

Ryan Gravenberch has stepped up following the appointment of Arne Slot in the off-season to become a key man for the Dutchman.

The Netherlands international, who was signed in 2023 under Jurgen Klopp, has started all 13 games in the Premier League and Champions League.

Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Dominic Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are among Slot’s other midfield options.

Liverpool want more midfield competition in January

However, sources say Liverpool’s transfer team are doing their due diligence on a potential central midfield signing in January to add competition to Slot’s squad.

Reds chiefs see the winter window as an opportune time to strengthen as they bid to keep their Premier League title challenge on track and maintain their flawless Champions League start.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (5 November) that Liverpool also want a new centre-back signing in January.

That plan is unrelated to the future of captain Virgil van Dijk, who is out of contract at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
