'From What I Hear' - Expert: Tottenham plotting free transfer signing

Tottenham are eyeing a stunning move to sign Lille and England star Angel Gomes as Ange Postecoglou is a big fan of his.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains very well-connected at the club, explained that Gomes would improve their team after proving himself for England.

With less than a year remaining on his contract in France, Tottenham are among the elite sides considering a move to sign the 24-year-old on a free transfer in the summer of 2025.

Postecoglou is said to be an admirer of the midfielder and would be keen to add him to his squad, but would experiment with a different role to that he plays for his country.

Given the strength of the deep-lying midfield position at Tottenham, Robinson suggested the manager could look to play him further up the pitch, alongside James Maddison.

Since moving to Lille from Manchester United in 2020, Gomes has proven his versatility and would be capable of filling in across the midfield.

Off the back of an impressive full debut against Finland at Wembley, Gomes has now been selected in Lee Carsley’s latest squad ahead of games against Greece and Finland as he continues to attract plenty of transfer interest.

Football Insider revealed on 14 September that Liverpool and Newcastle have joined Spurs in the race to sign the highly-rated midfielder.

Robinson, who made over 150 appearances for Tottenham, insisted that the club already has ample cover in a deeper role, but claimed Gomes would “without a doubt” improve the first team.

“He’s certainly a player that would make the team better without a doubt,” he told Football Insider.

“I think he’s proven himself on the international scale, and Lee Carsley obviously has a lot of faith in him because he’s a good player.

“Given his age, I think he can only get better.

“I think you’d have to look at him a bit higher up the pitch.

“If you look at the cover they’ve got in a deeper position with Bentancur, Bissouma, Sarr, Maddison’s been playing deep and they’ve also got Archie Gray.

“An attack-minded midfielder is something Tottenham will be be looking at alongside James Maddison, and, from what I hear from people at the club, Gomes could definitely be an option.“
