Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage got into a heated argument with an Everton fan after the Toffees’ defeat to Southampton.
A 1-0 defeat to the Saints at St. Mary’s in the Premier League on Saturday (2 November) saw Everton’s five-game unbeaten run come to an end.
Sutton and Savage were discussing the game on BBC Radio 5 Live when a Toffees fan phoned in and claimed that Sean Dyche is not good enough to manage a Premier League team, to which they took offence.
“Dyche can’t coach at this level, his tactics are… he doesn’t have any. Dyche cannot coach at Premiership level”, Michael, the Everton fan said 606 (2 November, 7:47 pm).
Savage was quick to respond to Michael, dubbing his statement “ridiculous”.
“He hasn’t been able to spend a lot of money and for you to say he doesn’t know how to coach at this level or he’s not good enough to coach at this level, that’s ridiculous”, the former Leicester City man said.
“You look at the job which he did at Burnley on a shoestring budget.”
The fan then doubled down on his stance by saying the Merseyside-based club have a team that is good enough to finish in the top seven.
“With the team we’ve got, we should be sixth or seventh in the league”, Michael added.
Perplexed by the statement, Sutton responded: “Which pub are you in, Michael? That’s ridiculous.”
Southampton defeat not a cause of concern for Everton?
Understandably, fans are frustrated after the Toffees succumbed to a defeat to Southampton, who had not won a league game this season before Saturday.
Dyche has also been questioned over some of his decisions in the game, including his call to start Jarrad Branthwaite on the bench.
However, Michael’s statements appear to be a knee-jerk reaction as there is no need for Everton to be concerned yet as they were on a five-game unbeaten run before the visit to St. Mary’s.
The Goodison Park outfit are placed sixteenth in the table with two wins and three draws in 10 games and sit four points above the relegation zone.
Dyche’s side has shown that they have what it takes to string together a run of good games and they are highly likely to do it again with 28 games left to play in the league.
It would not be a surprise if Everton reacted to the defeat with a win against West Ham United at the London Stadium next Saturday (9 November).
