Philippe Clement “can never kid supporters” with his comments in the wake of his Rangers side losing the Old Firm derby to Celtic, according to Peter Grant.
The former Celtic midfielder said on the Go Radio Football Show (6 September) that Clement mentioning his side’s 6-0 win over Ross County after being beaten 3-0 by Celtic was worrying in the extreme.
Grant added that Clement’s deflections after a game of such magnitude also did Gers supporters a disservice, with fans deserving to be told the truth.
In quotes reported by the Daily Record (7 September), he said: “Some of the stuff he comes out with, 6-0 against Ross County and best result in six years or something?
“Come on – Rangers fans don’t want to hear about the week before.
“Don’t make excuses. I would never have came out and said it was the best result in six years against Ross County – that worries me when he starts talking like that.
“You can never kid supporters, never in a million years. People are intelligent and watch the game.
“Fans will accept the truth. If he is believing what he is saying I am really surprised and really disappointed.”
Philippe Clement needs to break Celtic curse to survive at Rangers
No Rangers manager will be successful if they can’t beat Celtic in Old Firm derbies or at least compete with them on multiple fronts and, so far, Clement is yet to get one over on his side’s Glasgow rivals.
The Belgian’s record reads five matches in the Old Firm, one draw and four defeats, the most recent of which saw Celtic ease to a comfortable 3-0 win over his below-par Gers at Parkhead.
With the next meeting between the two sides – barring a fateful Scottish League Cup draw – is not until January, giving Clement a four-month stretch to build a team capable of winning such matches.
Starting four of his new signings didn’t exactly pay off for Clement at Celtic Park, with Vaclav Cerny and Robin Propper both having bad games in attack and defence respectively.
With Deadline Day arrivals Neraysho Kasanwirjo and the highly-anticipated Nedim Bajrami both likely to be in the fold over the coming months, Clement will hope that his new-look side has what it takes to beat Celtic when the two Glasgow rivals meet again.
In other Rangers news, one big-money Deadline Day arrival at Ibrox has been tipped to be a success for Clement’s side this season.
