Christian Norgaard being sent off for Brentford in the 0-0 draw against Everton on Saturday was “ridiculous”, Adrian Clarke has said.
Goodison Park welcomed the Bees on 23 November in the Premier League, with Chris Kavanagh giving the midfielder his marching orders after his challenge on Jordan Pickford in the 41st minute.
VAR recommended a review which then led to the decision, as Norgaard tried to get onto a cross into the box.
Speaking on The Athletic’s Totally Football Show [24 November], Clarke slammed the officials for the call and believes the Brentford captain should’ve stayed on the pitch.
“For me, Norgaard was sent off for trying to get on the end of a cross,” he said. “I thought that was a quite frankly ridiculous decision.”
Christian Norgaard red card right in Everton v Brentford
Kavanagh was right to brandish the red card against Norgaard, who flew into the Everton shot-stopper with his studs up.
The Denmark international caught the Toffees shot-stopper right below the knee, and the Englishman was lucky to get away relatively unscathed.
While one can argue that the defensive midfielder was going for the ball, that doesn’t change the fact that his action was reckless and threatening to Pickford.
The argument that Norgaard shouldn’t have been sent off because the England goalkeeper wasn’t hurt is also laughable.
There are clear directives for the referees to follow, and while VAR has been inconsistent since its implementation, the officials got it right this time around.
Despite the one-man advantage, the Toffees got worse in the second half, and Thomas Frank’s team looked the more threatening, leading to frustration from the Goodison faithful.
After the result, it seems like Sean Dyche still has credit in the bank, with Farhad Moshiri backing the 53-year-old [Sky Sports, 25 November].
In other Everton news, Dyche could decide to sell Domini Calvert-Lewin in January.
