'Right Now...' - Keith Wyness drops big Wolves points deduction verdict

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed new minority ownership at Wolves could help them prevent Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breaches in future.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted investment wouldn’t help for past seasons and claimed the Midlands club will need to sell players this summer.

According to The Sun (13 June), New York-based Moelis & Company have been hired to sell a stake in Wolves to raise funds to improve the squad while avoiding financial problems.

Wyness previously told Football Insider (19 June) that current owners Fosun are “looking for an exit” over the next few years as they search for minority investment.

Wolves held a huge 17-man fire sale last summer (2023), allowing the Molineux club to avoid a PSR breach and potential points deduction.

Pedro Neto, Max Kilman and Joao Gomes are among the most highly-coveted stars in Gary O’Neil’s squad.

Wolves plan end to PSR spiral with takeover, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “In terms of PSR, new ownership won’t help with preventing breaches for past seasons – but going into the future, it may do.

“There may be an opportunity to put more equity into the club, and that may be the way they are looking at this.

“There are lots of different factors, and I’ll be watching this one closely.

“I think they will have to sell players this summer.

“Gary O’Neil has had a great start and has done really well, so hopefully he has the trust and the backing to build his own squad with whatever is available.

“He’s got to put his own stamp on the club, and he’s got the right to do that now after his first season.

“They’ll be putting plans in place right now, which is probably why this minority ownership situation is coming to the fore.”
