Celtic duo Auston Trusty and Cameron Carter-Vickers have the potential to be a ‘wonderful’ defensive partnership.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and Scotland striker believes Trusty, 26, and Carter-Vickers, 26, have the ability to ‘take Celtic forward’ and can’t wait to see them play together at the heart of defence.

Carter-Vickers has been out for the club’s last seven games after picking up a toe injury in their 5-0 Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava in September.

The two Americans have yet to play together at either club or international level but share a similar playing style.

Both are calm and composed centre-backs, comfortable with the ball at their feet, but not scared to get stuck in if the need arises.

Auston Trusty and Cameron Carter-Vickers crucial for Celtic

Liam Scales has stepped up in Carter-Vickers’ absence, forming a partnership with Trusty, who has been pushed into the less familiar role on the right side of the defense.

Celtic remain top of the Scottish Premier League despite their 2-2 draw with title rivals Aberdeen on Saturday (October 19).

“Trusty and Carter-Vickers could make a wonderful partnership”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“There is nothing wrong with Scales to be fair but I think those two will take Celtic forward, the two of them could be class.

“They know each other and maybe that’s why Scales has stepped up his game because he knows he has competition.“
