Scott Allan issues Rangers sack verdict, reacts to mooted Clement exit by Monday after Aberdeen

Philippe Clement could be sacked by Rangers if he loses to Aberdeen but it is unlikely to happen within days of the game, says Scott Allan.

The pundit said on PLZ Soccer on 23 October that the Belgian is not getting “anything” out of the current players despite the context of an overhaul process going on at Ibrox and the manager telling the media his contract extension in the summer means he isn’t going anywhere.

He is under pressure after losing to 1-0 Kilmarnock on 20 October and faces a trip to Pittodrie on 30 October after games against FCSB and St Mirren, and while a loss against the Dons could be damning Allan doubts he would be let go within days of a loss.

He said (22m 10s): Already you can see there’s going to be a big fight on their hands for second, no question from what we’ve seen, especially the way Aberdeen performed away at Celtic…

“So this game’s huge for Rangers and at this current moment you would have to say Aberdeen are favourites.”

Asked what happens if the Gers lose he said: “Decisions will have to made, aye, no question.”

And to whether Clement could go he answered: “If they lose, we can talk about the things behind the scenes, with transfer windows and clear-outs, [but] the performance and what he’ll get out of the players you’ve got, to me he’s not getting anything out of the players he’s got. I think there’s more in there and I don’t think he’s the man that’s doing it at the moment.”

Pressed on whether Clement would last the weekend he said: “I think there’ll be a bit of time yet.”

Rangers boss under pressure after defeat at Kilmarnock

Coming out of the limp loss at Rugby Park there won’t be many Gers supporters who have much confidence in Clement’s side to do much better at a resurgent Aberdeen such under Jimmy Thelin.

Results in the Europa League and at home to St Mirren could restore some belief but it will take positive performances along with them to have much effect.

There hasn’t been much in the way of commanding matches since the excellent 2-0 away win at Malmo in the opening game of the group stage on 26 September.

So while Clement himself may be bullish about his job security he still needs to show that he deserves it.

It is certainly true that a cycle of hiring and firing has played a major part in getting the club to this low ebb, and a process of building back out from that point, while cutting costs and investing in the future, is unlikely to lead to immediate success.

Sacking him at this stage of that process risks derailing the entire thing, but Clement can’t simply carry on as he is knowing it is potentially too damaging to get rid of him.

All the above can be true, and results could be correspondingly inconsistent, but if there were signs of a style of play emerging and players correcting errors they have previously made, it would be a lot easier for fans to get behind.

In other Rangers news, a Ryan Kent update has emerged as Gers fans clamour for him to train with the club ahead of re-signing.
