Rangers will be without Oscar Cortes for the long term, Philippe Clement has confirmed during the latest injury round-up.
Clement addressed the media after the 2-0 win over St Johnstone at Ibrox on Sunday 6 October, issuing an update on the state of play of his squad.
The Belgian also discussed Ridvan Yilmaz, Danilo and Rabbi Matondo’s progress when asked whether they would be available after the international break.
Chris Jack, writing for the Rangers Review [6 October], shared what Clement told him: “I expect in training to have Danilo and Ridvan maybe, and the two others not yet, it’s too early for them.
“Yeah, [Cortes is] going to be longer term.”
Oscar Cortes can’t get going at Rangers
You have to feel sympathy for Cortes, who just cannot get a solidified run of games together at Rangers.
The young Colombian missed a sustained period last season while on loan at Ibrox, and then a knee injury suffered on the opening weekend of this term against Hearts had ruled him out when the initial prognosis was “four to five weeks” [STV News, 5 August].
Cortes returned for two games across the Scottish Premiership and League Cup but was struck down by another knock in a tackle against Dundee, which Clement confirmed [Daily Record, 25 September] would sideline him for “several weeks”.
His sketchy fitness record since arriving in Scotland has led to the club not yet committing to buying the forward, who on his day can pose a significant impact.
At least for Clement’s sake, his attacking players have largely done enough this season in the absences of Cortes, Matondo and Danilo, while Yilmaz’s anticipated return could allow Jefte to again flourish further forward down the left flank.
In other Rangers news, Derek Ferguson discusses an “emotional” Vaclav Cerny.
