'Shame' – Hoddle makes Ibrox observation, McCoist in complete agreement

Rangers and Celtic not having away supporters at Old Firm games is a “shame”, Glenn Hoddle and Ally McCoist have said.

Speaking on commentary for TNT Sports (12 December, 8:23pm), Hoddle and McCoist soaked in the atmosphere of the Gers’ 1-1 Europa League draw with Tottenham, which the away end added to at Ibrox.

Spurs’ 3,000 travelling fans helped to generate a raucous evening of European football, but both commentators were disappointed by how much the current Old Firm rules detract from the spectacle.

Hoddle said: “It’s the one thing that’s a shame about the Old Firm, isn’t it? No away supporters here.”

McCoist added: “Takes away so much of the game, it really does.”

Hampden Park to show Rangers what they’re missing out on

The next edition of Scottish football’s greatest rivalry takes place in just three days‘ time, as the Gers and Celtic pitch up at Hampden Park for the Scottish League Cup Final.

Returning to the stadium where their season began due to delayed redevelopments forcing them out of Ibrox, Philippe Clement’s side will be hoping they can make the most of home comforts at Hampden.

Rangers and Celtic fans will split Hampden Park down the middle for the Scottish League Cup Final

However, unlike any Old Firm game at Ibrox or Parkhead across the past few seasons, Light Blues and Celtic fans will have Hampden split down the middle as they battle for the first silverware of the season.

Having an atmosphere built by two sets of passionate fans going back and forth will generate one hell of an occasion at Hampden, but such bear pits aren’t replicated at Ibrox or Celtic Park at the moment.

McCoist in particular has supported efforts to bring away fans back to Old Firm matches at the two clubs’ home grounds, and hopefully Hampden on Sunday can provide a blueprint for the future.

In other Rangers news, one player’s return from injury at Auchenhowie gives Clement the perfect chance to cash in this January.
