Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has revealed his scepticism about Man United’s new stadium project generating £7.3billion per year for the UK economy.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the report is “putting a rosy picture” on the project.

United released renders of what a potential new stadium could look like last week (23 September) as part of an economic report the club has commissioned.

Oxford Economics, described as “one of the world’s foremost independent global advisory firms”, found a regeneration of Trafford Park and the construction of a new 100,000-seater stadium would boost the UK economy by £7.3billion per year.

The Red Devils are pushing forward with the project after investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe was ratified earlier this year.

Wyness sceptical about Man United claims – ‘I can’t see it’

Wyness agreed a new stadium and regeneration would have an economic impact but would be unlikely to reach a level of £7.3billion every year.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “If I wanted to buy a report to try and prove my case, that’s the sort of number I’d expect to come out of it.

“They were obviously commissioned by Man United, they’re putting a rosy picture on it.

“I haven’t seen the report.

“Of course, a new stadium project will have an economic impact because it will host more events and concerts. That lets the money filter through to bars and restaurants.

“But I can’t see it reaching £7.3billion per year.

“United want a report which will suit their case, and that’s what has happened in this particular instance.”
