Everton have suffered an unexpected pre-season blow as Youssef Chermiti was absent from the squad that took on Coventry City in a friendly on Tuesday night (30 July).
Chermiti has impressed with his performances in recent games, including strong showings at Sligo Rovers and against Salford City.
Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas shared the update ahead of Everton’s match at the Coventry Building Society Arena via the newspaper’s online blog [30 July].
He said: “The absent list includes Youssef Chermiti, who would have started this pre-season with hopes of making an impression and has really achieved that.
“His second-half display spared Everton’s blushes at Sligo Rovers when he scored two and created one in the 3-3 draw at The Showgrounds.
“He then came off the bench to win the free kick scored by James Garner at Salford. He finished last season with some nice cameos in the Premier League and appears to have carried the confidence from those appearances into this summer.
“It’s a shame he won’t get a chance tonight to build on that.”
Could it be a breakthrough season for Youssef Chermiti at Everton?
Chermiti might just be on the verge of a breakthrough season at Everton. After joining from Sporting Lisbon last summer for £15million, the 19-year-old had a quiet first 12 months, with only one goal in 21 appearances. However, this pre-season has shown a different side of Chermiti.
In recent matches, he’s been making headlines with his late goals and decent play. His performance against Sligo Rovers, where he scored twice to rescue Everton, and his lively contribution against Salford, suggest he’s finding his stride.
Chermiti’s ability to win key free-kicks and make threatening runs shows he’s adapting well to the Premier League’s demands.
With competition from Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin for a starting spot, Chermiti might get more chances come the start of the season.
Sean Dyche has also been full of praise for Chermiti’s improved physicality and fitness, with the young striker now on the verge of a big season. If his pre-season form continues, Everton fans might just see a breakout year from Chermiti.
His absence against Coventry is an obvious blow, but hopefully it is nothing too serious and he will be back involved against Preston North End on Saturday (3 August).
