‘Similar to Spurs’: Dimitar Berbatov has noticed something about Arsenal that’s just like Tottenham

Arsenal and Tottenham are two of the greatest of rivals in football, but, like many great rivals, they’re not so different after all.

Indeed, Spurs and Arsenal may truly dislike one another, but when you compare the two sides’ fortunes over the past 15 years or so, they are both very similar in that they’ve always been that one rung below being a truly elite side.

Arsenal and Tottenham have had some brushes with glory in recent years – Arsenal have finished second in the Premier League for consecutive seasons, while Tottenham were runners-up in the Champions League not too long ago.

Speaking on The Lineup, Dimitar Berbatov has been discussing why Arsenal can’t win the big trophies, and he’s claimed that the Gunners’ problems are similar to the problems Spurs have had.

Arsenal’s problems are similar to Tottenham’s

Berbatov made a comparison between the two north London clubs.

Indeed, the Bulgarian says that, just like Tottenham, Arsenal can’t take their chances of glory, saying that Arsenal lack consistency and the ability to turn up in the big moments.

“I’ll be honest. I like Arteta, Arteta plays football I want to see and watch. I like to watch how they play, but at the same time with Arsenal it’s somewhere similar to Spurs ‘we’re almost there, but we cannot take it.’” Berbatov said.

“They’ve had chances in two seasons to win the Premier League, but they cannot take it. Why? I don’t know, experience, consistency, winning in the right moments, it’s not there for them.”

Arsenal are still ahead of Tottenham

Berbatov compares Arsenal’s issues with Spurs’, but that does seem a tad unfair.

Indeed, despite not winning tons of silverware, Arteta has already achieved more at Arsenal than Spurs have achieved in the last 15 years or so.

Yes, Mauricio Pochettino was a success with Tottenham and he did come close to winning the biggest trophies, but, ultimately he didn’t end Spurs’ trophy drought.

Meanwhile, Arteta has won an FA Cup, and he’s matched Pochettino’s highest leage finish to boot.

Arsenal are still being backed to win the league this year despite a slow start to the season, and while Berbatov has concerns about Arsenal’s consistency and mentality, only time will tell whether or not the Gunners can indeed get over the line and secure a major honour this season.
