Sky Sports journalist has now shared the latest on Liverpool and Federico Chiesa this evening

Liverpool have been relatively quiet in the summer transfer window, but they are now set to make one signing – and another could well be in the pipeline.

The Reds are closing in on the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili and they’re now said to have got the ball rolling with regards to an outfield player.

The player in question is Juventus attacker Federico Chiesa, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Liverpool have made contact to try and sign him.

Now, Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas has shared what he knows about the Reds and their purported pursuit of the Italy international.

Liverpool have enquired about Federico Chiesa but pursuit not yet under way

Thomas, speaking on Sky Sports News as per their website, sought to play down speculation linking the two parties together.

The reporter says Liverpool have made enquiries about the winger, but they’re not actively pursuing him at this stage.

Thomas said the Reds are eager to assess the market in case any good opportunities emerge, but he insists that Arne Slot is happy with his squad as things stand.

“Liverpool have made enquiries about Federico Chiesa – but are yet to actively pursue a deal for the Juventus winger,” said the Sky Sports journalist.

“Liverpool are assessing the market with a long-term view to adding the best talent when the right opportunities emerge.

“As such, exploring the conditions of a deal for Chiesa – an established Italy international – is part of that process.

“Chiesa is therefore one of a number of players Liverpool are looking at with four days left of the window.

“Liverpool may strike in the market before the deadline if the opportunity arises, but they are happy with their options.”

Thomas also explained that Barcelona are among the other teams that have also looked at a potential move for Chiesa, who has been frozen out by Juve.

“The Italian side need to sell in order to help with financial regulations – especially now they are back in the Champions League – and did not include Chiesa in their pre-season tour,” he added.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Chiesa, along with north London rivals Tottenham.

What could Federico Chiesa bring to Liverpool?

Chiesa has been superb for Juve over the years and, at 26 years of age, he’s entering his prime, making him a prime candidate to join a Premier League club.

He has made 131 appearances for the Turin-based outfit, grabbing 34 goals and 25 assists, and has also won 51 caps for Italy, scoring seven times.

Scouting FTBL wrote in 2020: “His strongest attributes are explosive speed allied with promising dribbling skills which he utilises fairly well when facing up defenders to burst past them on either side.

“He’s not a traditional winger tasked with launching crosses into the box; when he does beat his man, his preference is to vary his delivery into the box by attempting cut-backs or through balls into dangerous areas.

“You would be forgiven for thinking he was taller than his recorded height of 5’9″ too. He’s a powerful athlete able to use this physique and pace to create a number of problems for defences.”

Former Italy defender Alessandro Pierini described Chiesa to Tuttomercatoweb – via Forza Italian Football – as “world-class” back in 2021.
