Manchester United will follow the Tottenham blueprint and embark on a “money-spinning” post-season tour of Malaysia at the end of the current season.
As per The Athletic [22 December], the Red Devils are expected to earn £7.6 million in revenue from the tour, a concept Spurs adopted this year.
The Lilywhites met Newcastle United at the 100,000-seater Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia only three days after the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign in May.
Manchester United will set off on tour to generate revenue to stay within the confines of the Profit and Sustainability rules, a subject Tottenham knows far too well after operating £86.8m in the red throughout the last financial year.
Tottenham are paving the way for creative revenue streams
While jokes have emerged that Tottenham have announced “more partnerships than wins” this season, there is no doubting Levy’s status as a financial mogul.
The Spurs owner has utilised the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to its maximum potential by hosting non-football events such as concerts and, perhaps more lucratively, NFL matches, which deliver a £344m boost to the local economy annually.
It goes without saying that the more money Spurs can generate off the pitch, the more can be invested on the pitch, and Ange Postecoglou desperately needs reinforcements as his squad continues to struggle for consistent form.
Levy has invested £194m out of his own pocket into the Lilywhites since he assumed control in 2001 [The Athletic, 18 November] – as is standard business practice, he will be eager to see a positive return on his investment.
Therefore, it is paramount Levy strives to increase the revenue streams in North London, and as Manchester United copies his blueprint, Tottenham should return the favour and follow the 20-time Premier League champion’s example of growing a global brand.
Levy may very well be seething with Manchester United’s decision as a proud business owner and could look to take Spurs on a post-season tour again in 2025, but he should see this announcement as a compliment rather than a dent to his ego.
But it is Levy – despite his love/hate relationship with the Tottenham faithful – he is likely to be furious Sir Jim Ratcliffe has copied his approach.
In other Tottenham news, a Quinten Timber transfer claim has emerged with Spurs ready to sell a first-team ace.
