Netflix are at the heart of a “bigger picture” play at Tottenham after their recent partnership, Dan Plumley has said.
The streaming giant used Spurs’ 6-3 defeat against Liverpool on 22 December to help launch the new season of Squid Game, with fans not happy with the presence of actors around the ground.
Plumley, a football finance expert, admitted that more revenue could be generated for Spurs with Netflix at the centre of things to come under Daniel Levy.
“I think you’ve got to look at the bigger picture with this one,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.
“I’ve seen the instant fan backlash from it, so we know that some of the fans are not happy about this, but it’s the bigger picture.
“It’s not just the endorsement with this Squid Game angle, it’s the bigger Netflix angle and we know that they are potentially lining up documentaries in sport.
“Look at the Spurs deal with the NFL, we know they’ve been targeting an NFL-based documentary, you can see the possibilities. Netflix is going to be the new home of the WWE, and one of the flagship shows will be the WWE Raw programme in the New Year.
Netflix at the heart of new Tottenham developments
“There are lots in the background there, you can see this is a bigger picture thing for Spurs, it’s not just this initial little thing going on, it may be part of a wider piece in the future that could generate them revenue.
“This is how to engage with your fanbase in a more digital way, in different ways and targeting more ways in life and entertainment but clearly there is a bigger picture at play with Netflix at the centre of it.”
Levy is not a popular figure among Spurs fans, he knows that, but he is a ruthless genius when it comes to generating revenue – the best in the Premier League.
Netflix is really pushing in the sports world now, with live NFL to come around Christmas and the recent boxing bout between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul.
Levy and Tottenham could be about to take advantage of that.
