Brondby are pushing to sign Gustavo Puerta from Bayer Leverkusen after interest in the midfielder from Rangers, according to Tipsbladet.
The Danish outlet reported via their website on 16 August that the Danish side have advanced on a move for the Colombian, amid links to the Light Blues, Greek outfit PAOK, and Belgian side Anderlecht.
Brondby and Leverkusen were said to be virtually agreed, with a choice to be made between a loan deal with an option to buy or a €3.5million [£2.98m] purchase with add-ons.
Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reported via X later the same day that an agreement on the second option has been struck, with a sell-on clause also included, as the 21-year-old now has to decide if he wants that move.
Two more clubs are said to be in the race still, although Football Scotland on 15 August disputed Danish reports and claims Rangers’ interest saw an approach made in January rather than this summer.
Rangers look set to miss out on Bayer Leverkusen ace
Whether interest from Ibrox remains currently or not amid the conflicting reports looks like it is going to be a moot point as the Light Blues miss out on another player they have been interested in.
Philippe Clement has been forced to start the season without a large part of the transfer overhaul he has been tasked with being completed in time.
The Belgian confirmed on 16 August that there are multiple players still at Ibrox who have been told they are not required any more [via Joshua Barrie], and it has made the job of bringing in new signings harder.
Puerta may not be the senior midfield option that had been hoped for but might have helped sure up the midfield behind the developing partnership of Mohamed Diomande and Connor Barron.
It looks like he will either be heading to Denmark or be snapped up by another suitor as things stand, barring a dramatic series of events that sees the Light Blues arrive back into the equation.
But unfortunately that is par for course currently unless the likes of Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi can be moved on [Sky Sports, 12 August], with Clement having publicly announced both are training with the B Team.
In other Rangers news, a Light Blues transfer update has emerged after talks with a Premier League giant.
