'So skint...' - Kieran Maguire shares Moshiri stumbling block to Everton sale

Farhad Moshiri’s poor financial situation could pose a problem for a possible Everton sale, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

The Toffees are back at square on in their pursuit of a buyer after the collapse of the Friedkin Group deal with little being said about a potential new buyer.

Maguire said one stumbling block is the price Moshiri is asking for to “sort himself out” with buyers reticent to pay anything on top of paying off the club’s debts.

Speaking to TBR Football (7 August), he said: “My perception of the value of the club is that I can’t see much, if anything, beyond the outstanding debt.

“That means that the equity value is close to zero.

“I have had long conversations with well-connected people at Everton, and they say that there is not a lot of interest in Everton for the price that Moshiri is trying to get.

“The problem is that Moshiri is so skint. He probably needs £25m to £50m to sort himself out, and that is proving to be a stumbling block.

“As well as that, there is the overhang from the 777 Partners debt.”

Everton face serious problems

Since things collapsed with The Friedkin Group, there’s been a huge sense of unease around Goodison Park. As has been the case so many times with the club, it felt like things were heading in the right direction. Then, all of a sudden, the rug was pulled out from underneath optimistic fans.

In terms of what Sean Dyche has been able to do thus far this summer, supporters are fairly content. He knows that he has to work within a certain budget and he’s doing everything he can to stick to that. Still, there comes a point in time where you have to say that enough is enough.

We’re talking about a team that has been fighting relegation for a good few seasons now. It’s great to think about a scenario where hope is on the horizon but, right now, it seems like the fanbase is being strung along. If Moshiri’s issues are so deeply rooted, then, unfortunately, it may take a while before this is resolved.
