Everton are “desperate” to keep Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Goodison Park, according to TEAMtalk.

The outlet reported on 7 August that talks over a new contract for the striker are still taking place behind the scenes but negotiations are proving difficult.

Calvert-Lewin, 27, is out of contract in June 2025, and has been linked with an exit during the transfer window with Newcastle United and Manchester United named as suitors (Liverpool Echo).

Everton can’t lose Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer

Calvert-Lewin has had his injury issues at times for Everton but, as proven last season, when he is fit the team are much better when he plays.

And, right now, no one would doubt that Calvert-Lewin is the Toffees’ strongest option at number nine and losing him would mean that a suitable replacement has to be found.

Their only other natural option at striker is Beto and, considering his form last season as well as the fact that there are multiple interested parties in acquiring his services [Joe Thomas, 5 August, 53:00], the Portuguese striker cannot be relied upon as the main striker option.

With Calvert-Lewin’s contract expiring at the end of the 2024/25 season, there is a slight risk looming over the heads of Everton that their talisman could leave the club on a free transfer.

Given the financial predicament at the club they can ill-afford to lose a player of his calibre on a free transfer, so it does leave Everton with a potentially tricky decision to make.

A contract or the sale of the player [Liverpool ECHO, 7 August] needs to be agreed upon soon or the Toffees could find themselves in a real predicament sooner rather than later.
