Nathan Patterson is still “some way off” an Everton return despite being back in training at Finch Farm, Liam McLeod has said.
Speaking on commentary for BBC Sportsound (12 October, 5:15pm), McLeod discussed the timeline of Patterson’s return during Scotland’s Nations League defeat against Croatia.
Patterson has been out of action since April following surgery on a ruptured hamstring, and despite reports stating he could be available as soon as 19 October for the Blues, McLeod wasn’t as optimistic.
“Nathan Patterson just working his way back at Everton,” he said.
“He’s still some way off, I think though – at least he is back in training.”
Nathan Patterson return can’t come soon enough for Everton
While Scotland have the likes of Anthony Ralston, Nicky Devlin and Max Johnston to call on at right-back in the absences of Patterson and Aaron Hickey, Sean Dyche has no such luxury at Goodison Park.
Years of transfer mismanagement and turbulent finances left Dyche with very little wiggle room in this summer’s transfer window, and an evident lack of depth on the right-hand side was not addressed.
With Patterson injured throughout the summer and no new faces brought in, Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman have been Dyche’s only senior right-back options, and that seniority has shown at times.
Young was sent off on the opening day for a mistimed challenge against Brighton, while Coleman – the younger of the duo and still 13 years older than Patterson – has also spent time on the treatment table.
Academy product Roman Dixon and the versatile James Garner have emerged as stop-gap right-backs for Dyche, but he and the entire Toffees faithful will be hoping for Patterson’s return as soon as possible.
In other Everton news, the Toffees became the subject of a joke following Manchester City’s legal case with the Premier League.
