Tottenham want Son Heung-min to stay with them into his late 30s, but an agreement over a new contract is not close, according to The Times.
The newspaper reported via their website on 21 December that the 32-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the season as things stand, with the forward well-positioned to field enticing offers in Europe and lucrative deals further away.
Spurs, meanwhile, insist they will exercise their option to extend the South Korea international’s deal by another year, although hopes of tying him down to a longer contract remain unfulfilled.
Tottenham eye likes of Nico Williams to replace Son Heung-min
The North London giants are aware that they will soon to have find a successor for Son and have been laying the groundwork for that in the last couple of years.
As per The Times, they have heavily scouted the likes of Eberechi Eze, Nico Williams and Jamie Gitten as they eye a replacement for the former Bayer Leverkusen ace.
The fact that they considered signing Pedro Neto before he joined Chelsea in the summer shows Daniel Levy is working hard to find an ideal replacement for Son.
There have been concerns about Son losing his pace as he ages, but there is no denying that he remains an important asset to Ange Postecoglou’s side.
He has bagged five goals and six assists in 13 Premier League appearances this season, while also finding the back of the net twice in other competitions.
This is why Tottenham are prepared to see him continue with them into his late 30s.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs have rejected several approaches for this star ahead of the January transfer window.
