Chilwell transfer: Tottenham told to strike Chelsea loan after Maresca update

Jamie O’Hara has urged Tottenham to seek a loan deal for Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell in January.

Ange Postecoglou is eager to strengthen his defensive options in North London ahead of the transfer window and will be in the market for a new centre-back recruit.

However, Sky Sports reported on Friday [20 December] that Enzo Maresca is expecting Chilwell to push for a Chelsea exit and former Spurs man Jamie O’Hara has urged Tottenham to enter the frame for his signature when discussing potential incomings on Grosvenor Sport [21 December, 5:26].

He said: “I’d probably take Ben Chilwell on loan as well, because [Destiny] Udogie plays every single game.”

Tottenham could offer Ben Chilwell a way out of Chelsea

While Destiny Udogie has found himself in the firing line at times this season, particularly after the 1-0 loss against Bournemouth, he is undisputably the preferred option at left-back for Tottenham.

The Italian international gave Postecoglou a scare after he was removed in the 28th-minute of the 5-0 win against Southampton last weekend with a suspected injury and missed the subsequent Carabao Cup victory against Manchester United on Thursday [19 December].

Serge Reguilon stands as the only deputy for Udogie but, even still, has struggled for game time in North London with Udogie tasked with starting every fixture when available and is expected to be offered a return to Spain with La Liga outfit Getafe in January [Mucho Deporte].

Postecoglou has already learned the hard way this season how a small squad can dwindle quickly after rushing back Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven to the starting lineup against Chelsea, only to aggravate their respective injuries further.

Therefore, a loan deal for Chilwell would be the perfect solution for Tottenham as he would provide sufficient depth and push Udogie for a starting berth.

The 28-year-old was a regular in West London under former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and started the Champions League final win against Manchester City in 2020.

He knows London, the Premier League, and, more importantly, how to win – this is a no-brainer deal for Postecoglou.

In other Tottenham news, a Richarlison exit update has emerged as a ‘shock’ approach has been made for the Spurs ace.
