Tottenham player ratings vs Hearts: How Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall performed on debuts
All 24 players rated! ????
Tottenham Hotspur took to the grass for the first time officially this summer in their trip to Edinburgh to play Hearts of Midlothian.
Ange Postecoglou fielded two different sides for each half with Spurs taking the lead into the break before quickly seeing that change after the interval.
After 11 changes at half time and a further substitute during the second half, Spurs pulled clear of their opponents in a clinical display.
Here’s how all 24 players got on…
First half XI
Brandon Austin – 8
Brandon Austin finds himself battling for the spot as number two this season behind Guglielmo Vicario.
The 25-year-old did not have a huge deal to do on the night but his save from point-blank range was one which he will remember for a long time.
Pedro Porro – 7
After being left out of Spain’s Euro 2024 winning squad, Pedro Porro will be coming into the new campaign with a point to prove.
The right-back looked sharp as he played incredibly high up the pitch with Spurs pushing the home side deep into their own half. Porro looks ready for the season opener.
Archie Gray – 9
What a debut! Spurs fans are going to get used to hearing this a lot over the coming months but Archie Gray showed the composure of a seasoned veteran, not an 18-year-old.
Of course, there was not a huge amount of pressure on Gray who was playing at centre-back against a Hearts side which did not put much pressure on but his tackling and passing was terrific.
Oliver Skipp – 6
Another central midfielder playing at centre-back due to Tottenham’s regular options currently enjoying their summer break.
Oliver Skipp finds his future in doubt this summer but he did find himself taking a few risks which could have cost Spurs in the game against Steven Naismith’s side.
Jamie Donley – 7
Having impressed in the behind closed doors friendly on the weekend against Cambridge United, Jamie Donley maintained his spot at left-back.
However, he did get himself forward playing as the inverted full-back and showed his quality with some of his passing.
Yves Bissouma – 6
A big season awaits the Mali midfielder and he did not exactly light up the pitch in what was a relatively quiet evening.
James Maddison – 7
Another player who will be coming into the season with a point to prove after his omission from the England squad, James Maddison provided a great assist for the opening goal.
He did also find himself on the end of a crunching tackle which appeared to cause him a lot of pain… maybe one to watch for Postecoglou.
Dejan Kulusevski – 7
A simply stunning touch into the path of Maddison in the build-up to the opening goal, Dejan Kulusevski take a bow.
The Swede started in midfield as opposed to on the wing and looked bright from that position.
Brennan Johnson – 8
Just days after netting a hat-trick against Cambridge, Brennan Johnson added another to his name as he opened the scoring.
The Wales international is making a really bright start to pre-season with a goal which is becoming a trademark Johnson finish.
Heung-min Son – 6
The Spurs captain found himself regularly dropping deep to get the attacking moves up and running just like Harry Kane used to do.
Heung-min Son should have opened the scoring but was fired his shot straight at Craig Gordon between the sticks in the Hearts net.
Manor Solomon – 6
Should have earned himself an assist but Son was unable to control his cross. Much needed minutes under the belt for Manor Solomon.
Second half XI
Alfie Whiteman – 6
Not a lot he could have done with Shankland’s equaliser but his passing was poor at times.
Djed Spence – 10
A real surprise to see Djed Spence make the squad considering his future hangs in the balance.
He was even able to provide a brilliant assist – should have had two – for Tottenham’s second goal and then get his name on the scoresheet.
The right-back’s attitude looked absolutely terrific.
Ashley Phillips – 7
A quiet night for the young centre-back who may find himself battling for the spot as fourth-choice this season and he will have done his chances good with a goal.
Emerson Royal – 4
Starting the second half as one of the most experienced players on the pitch, Emerson Royal had a moment of madness which allowed Lawrence Shankland to level the score.
Postecoglou will not have been impressed with the Brazilian who looks set to leave this summer.
Max Robson – 6
A quiet display but did not put a foot wrong.
Tyrese Hall – 7
Another name which is being tipped for a bright future in north London, Tyrese Hall was able to put in a tidy performance.
Lucas Bergvall – 9
The Swedish debutant had big shoes to fill after Gray’s sensational first half display but he remained cool under the pressure.
Got himself two assists on the night, a bright start to life as a Spurs player.
Alfie Devine – 6
Outshone by the likes of Moore and Spence in the second half but did not do anything to harm his chances.
Mikey Moore – 8
The exciting youngster showed himself to be exactly that. Mikey Moore looked a real threat on the right side which was not the case on the other flank.
His first goal for the first team came just 21 minutes into his showing in Edinburgh and he took it incredibly well.
Will Lankshear – 8
How Spurs fans will have enjoyed that, very Kane-esque and Will Lankshear will be hoping to put a real case in for himself this summer after a dazzling 2023/24 term.
Taken off after just 21 minutes, perhaps a sign he is going to start on Saturday against Queens Park Rangers.
Timo Werner – 7
The German international is back for another season and Spurs fans will want to see him quickly up his game. Sloppy at times but got himself an assist.
Substitutes
Alejo Veliz – 4
Missed his golden opportunity, Lankshear will have been licking his lips at that chance. Forced off due to a nose bleed.
Dane Scarlett – 5
Had a great opportunity just minutes after coming on but couldn’t hold his line. He then squandered a header from close range.
