Son Heung-min has been branded as unhelpful by Simon Jordan for his actions during the 4-1 win for Tottenham Hotspur over Aston Villa on Sunday.
Jordan, in his column on page 75 of Thursday’s Daily Mail [7 November], said the Spurs skipper’s reaction to being substituted 56 minutes into the game on Sunday [3 November] “wasn’t helpful” as Ange Postecoglou withdrew him with the scores level at 1-1.
The bold move proved successful from the Australian as a Dominic Solanke double and James Maddison’s late free kick added to Brennan Johnson’s equaliser, assisted by Son – whose long-term future is unclear.
Jordan said: “We usually see Ange Postecoglou looking down at the floor during television interviews but on his behalf I felt like shouting ‘up yours!’ to those who questioned his decision to hook captain, Son Heung-min, during Sunday’s 4-1 win against Aston Villa.
“One pundit asked, ‘what is he thinking?’ when the change was made at 1-1 and they’d have been all over the Spurs manager like a cheap suit if it hadn’t worked out.
“Turns out Ange’s thinking was to go out and smash Villa and he was proven more than right after a brave decision, even if Son’s reaction to being withdrawn wasn’t helpful.”
Son Heung-min withdrawal justified for Tottenham
What entertains about Postecoglou at Tottenham is his outright brazenness and willingness to go against the grain.
That exhibited itself once again to great effect at the weekend, as a Spurs side missing key men such as Micky van de Ven flourished against a Villa team who had lost only to North London rivals Arsenal all season at that point.
Son has games that suit him down to the ground, and his output has long been devastating in those games, but Postecoglou sensed a left-field opportunity to secure the points and pulled it off.
The Korean’s “who, me?” reaction was reminiscent of just how integral he has been to his side down the years, which may understandably give him a complex as the dressing room’s leader having taken the mantle from Harry Kane in 2023.
Slightly humbling it may have been, but it barely reflects badly on Son in the bigger picture; rather just excellently on his boss.
