'The bottom line is...' - Peter Grant shares new Steven Gerrard to Rangers verdict

Steven Gerrard would be working with a much worse Rangers squad if he were to make a return to Ibrox, Peter Grant has said.

The former Gers boss is currently skating on thin ice in Saudi Arabia, facing criticism from the Al-Ettifaq fanbase due to his side’s form in the Saudi Pro League this season [Football Scotland].

With Philippe Clement also under pressure at Ibrox, with the Light Blues now nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership table, rumours of a return for Gerrard are beginning to swirl.

Speaking via the Go Radio Football Show [6 November], Grant said: “The bottom line is that if he [Steven Gerrard] comes back now, there is less money and less quality within the group.

“Seeing the Rangers games from afar, the squad doesn’t look as strong as it was last season. Whether it’s Gerrard, Jurgen Klopp, Jose Mourinho, if you’re not paying players nowadays, you can’t give someone a Rangers hat.”

Steven Gerrard to return to Rangers as Philippe Clement replacement?

It remains to be seen who could replace Clement at the helm and attempt to clean up the mess that has been created at Ibrox so far this season.

Having dropped out of the Champions League much earlier in the campaign, the Gers are still struggling to compete in the Europa League and are nowhere near challenging for the Scottish Premiership title.

However, the managerial situation is far from the biggest concern at Ibrox, with the boardroom facing plenty of questions over who is supposed to be in charge.

While Gerrard looks to be on the verge of losing his job in Saudi Arabia, it is difficult to believe that he could return to Scotland after the way he left for Aston Villa in 2021.

The 44-year-old, who won the league with Rangers during his three years in Scotland, has done little to impress since his departure, so few fans can see what he would have to offer instead of Clement.

With a much worse squad and financial situation, Gerrard would be coming into a dire situation.

In other Rangers news, Simon Jordan has called for serious action after what Gers fans did before the Motherwell clash, “ban them”.
