Celtic’s latest Champions League victory serves as good news for Rangers as Scottish football has “launched up the coefficient table”.

The rivalry between the two clubs is still as fierce as ever but Celtic progressing in the Champions League would be a bittersweet event for Rangers.

As a result of their 3-1 win over RB Leipzig on Tuesday (5 November), Scotland have moved from 17th to 13th in the coefficient table.

According to the Daily Record (print edition, 7 November, page 45), Scotland has “jumped above Greece, Denmark and Switzerland”, meaning the nation is on course to securing two Champions League spots for the 2026/27 season.

Rangers have to improve to see any profit from Celtic success

While the second Champions League spot is certainly something that could be enticing for Rangers, performances will have to improve massively under Clement if he is to remain as manager for the foreseeable.

If Celtic can continue to perform in the Champions League, it would provide Scottish football with two spots in the competition having lost them for the 25/26 season.

Quite frankly, Rangers’ performances this season have been far away from what would be needed to succeed in football’s biggest club competition but the incentive to improve could very quickly be there.

Rangers have to improve though and soon. The Gers find themselves nine points from the top having lost to both Celtic and Aberdeen this season and Clement’s position at Ibrox is seemingly hanging by a thread.

One of the only positives so far has been their success in the Europa League with two wins from their opening three games as they set their sights on qualification to the next stage.

In other Rangers news, Steven Gerrard would be working with a much worse squad if he were to make a return to Ibrox, Peter Grant has said.
