Phil McNulty believes Everton will only consider sacking Sean Dyche should a “dire emergency” arise before the end of the season.
The Blues boss is back to square one in the Premier League as a 0-0 draw against West Ham United leaves the side three points adrift of the relegation zone, with the pressure building for Dyche to lead the club to midtable security at the least.
However, chief football writer McNulty discussed the Everton manager’s ongoing situation in a Q&A for BBC Sport [11 November] and believes he will remain at the helm until the end of the campaign, only if the side steers clear of the threat of relegation.
He said: “There is certainly a growing frustration from Everton fans at the style of football being played under Sean Dyche, although I do think it was a case of needs must last season, he did a good job getting Everton to safety. It was not about style at that point. It was about safety.
“This season, however, has been really tough to watch and results have been poor as well. The return of 10 points from their first 11 games is well below what would have been expected given those fixtures and they now have a tough run coming up.
“I do not think Everton, given that a new ownership is in the process of being confirmed, will consider changing managers unless it really becomes a dire emergency.
“I am sorry to say this to you, but ambitions this season must be limited to staying up before going into the new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, which offers the opportunity of a fresh start and re-set under American billionaire Dan Friedkin after years of crisis and chaos.
“Dyche has a track record of being able to do that.
“I would, though, be very surprised if Sean Dyche takes Everton into that new stadium. His contract expires at the end of the season and history shows new owners nearly always want their own managers. I do not expect Friedkin to be any different.
Everton could be in huge trouble in the Premier League
As referenced in the question presented to McNulty in the Q&A, Everton have faced the easiest run of fixtures on paper in the Premier League and have only managed 10 points from 11 matches.
While Dyche approached the match at the London Stadium with caution, well aware another loss would ultimately result in an end to his tenure [talkSPORT], the draw still leaves his future up for debate.
Nevertheless, The Friedkin Group will have the final say on the matter, and until the prospective owners complete the takeover, Dyche will have ample time to convince TFG he can lead the new era at Bramley-Moore Dock next term.
However, Dyche will be staring down the barrel of a gun when club football resumes. The Blues will host high-scoring Brentford before facing Manchester United, Wolves, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and surprise package Nottingham Forest in quick succession.
The fixtures ahead have never appeared more daunting for Everton and, given the recent run of form, it is hard to envision the side picking too many points in the run-in to the New Year.
Everton could be entering the January transfer market well amid a relegation battle, further weakening the appeal to potential signings to bolster the squad for the business end of the campaign.
Dyche is safe for now. However, this stance will surely change in the coming weeks should the “dire emergency” cited by McNulty become a reality at Goodison Park.
