Birmingham City have offered a package deal with £10million to sign Jay Stansfield from Fulham, sources have told Football Insider.
Should an agreement be reached between the two clubs, the deal will be worth more than double the previous record signing by a League One club.
The existing record, set by the Blues earlier this summer, saw Christoph Klarer join Chris Davies’ side from Darmstadt for around £3.5million.
Their free-spending summer following relegation from the Championship also saw Willum Thor Willumsson arrive for £3.3million – the second-highest ever fee.
Having spent last season on loan at St Andrew’s, Birmingham had made Stansfield’s return a priority, and are now pushing to complete a deal in the closing stages.
The striker, 21, found the net against the Blues in Fulham’s 2-0 Carabao Cup victory on 27 August, but could now make the permanent move there before the 11pm deadline.
Birmingham City pushing to complete Jay Stansfield transfer today
Stansfield is a product of the Fulham academy, having made the move from Exeter City in 2021, but has only represented the club ten times since his debut in 2020.
His loan spell with the Blues in the Championship last season saw him score 13 goals and provide three assists in 47 appearances – impressing despite their eventual relegation.
The recruitment team at St Andrew’s have had a busy summer in strengthening the side to bounce straight back up to League One.
They have been pushing to sign Stansfield throughout the summer window after Football Insider revealed they had opened talks over a permanent deal on 22 July.
Their initial offer had come in at around £6million, which would have been record-breaking in itself, but was rejected by Marco Silva’s side.
Prolific striker Alfie May joined Davies’ side from Charlton earlier this summer and has already scored three goals in three League One games, but they remain keen to bolster their ranks by signing the 21-year-old.
Should a deal be approved by both sides, Stansfield will join the likes of May, Klarer, Willumsson and Lyndon Dykes as part of 16 new arrivals at the club.
There is a growing determination to get a deal over the line before 11pm tonight despite Fulham’s current reluctance to see him leave.
In other news, Sheffield United have opened talks to sign Samuel Edozie.
