Newcastle Sources: Significant update on Marc Guehi deal today

Newcastle United are set to miss out on Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi after growing frustrated in negotiations, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Palace’s imminent signing of Maxence Lacroix will not impact their stance on Guehi on deadline day.

Sources say Newcastle will now consider other options before the window closes at 11pm tonight but face a race against time to get a deal over the line.

The departure of Joachim Andersen, who joined Fulham from Palace earlier this summer, made the deal more complicated for the Magpies.

Following that, an injury blow to Chadi Riad during their 4-0 Carabao Cup win against Norwich City meant the Eagles were even more reluctant to entertain Guehi’s exit.

Football Insider first revealed on 17 August that Eddie Howe’s side would have to pay a fee in excess of £70million for the defender – and Palace stood firm with their demand.

Guehi has been at Palace since making the £18million move from Chelsea in 2021, and has become one of the most important players under Oliver Glasner.

He made 29 appearances for the Eagles last time out as they finished 10th in the Premier League and has started all three of their opening games this season.

Following an impressive Euro 2024 campaign at the heart of England’s defence, Guehi had attracted admirers across the Premier League including Liverpool.

Newcastle made the defender their number-one target to strengthen the back line at St James’ Park and had been pushing for the club to reach an agreement.

However, Palace were determined to retain his signature after losing Andersen alongside Michael Olise in this summer’s transfer window.

The centre-back was also named Palace’s club captain before the start of the Premier League season, in a clear display of their intent to keep him at Selhurst Park.

Glasner and Steve Parish now look set to keep both Guehi and Eberechi Eze at the club as they were desperate to do before the window opened.

Newcastle have now been forced into the market on the final day of the window after missing out on another key target.

Howe and sporting director Paul Mitchell have been frustrated in the window so far, leading to fans voicing their anger at their transfer business.
