Newcastle United could be forced to sell Harvey Barnes in the January transfer window due to profit and sustainability, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the winger leaving St. James’ Park would be seen as a “big shock.”
Newcastle having to sacrifice the 27-year-old would be done in order for them to spend money elsewhere on potential star players.
The situation would be a tough one for Eddie Howe to stomach if he had to lose Barnes, as it’s not a deal he wants to happen.
The Magpies had to sacrifice Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson in the summer to comply with PSR, weakening their squad for this season.
Newcastle are keen to avoid any potential points deductions as the club are continuing to fight for European football next season.
Harvey Barnes’ Newcastle future is up in the air
Barnes’ potential sale would allow the club to raise money to spend elsewhere, as the Magpies cannot make any new signings without selling star names.
The left winger has featured in all 15 of Newcastle’s Premier League games this season, scoring five goals and providing one assist.
However, Barnes has only completed 90 minutes once this season as Howe has managed his minutes.
