‘Credit to him’: Leandro Trossard left in awe of ‘amazing’ Arsenal teammate in 2-0 win vs Aston Villa

It’s safe to say that Arsenal winger Leandro Trossard grabbed his chance when Mikel Arteta introduced him in the second half against Aston Villa.

Gabriel Martinelli started the game on the left for Arsenal, as he did against Wolverhampton Wanderers last Saturday.

The Brazilian was working hard and finding a lot of space but looked timid when running at his defender – he wasn’t playing with his usual confidence.

It’s understandable that Martinelli isn’t quite at his best, he endured a disrupted campaign last term through injury and because of Trossard’s rich form.

But as should be the case at any top club, if Martinelli isn’t quite taking his chance, there’s another player raring to go.

And at Arsenal right now, there’s few better off of the bench than Trossard.

That being said, although Trossard was ultimately the difference maker going forward for Arsenal, the winger was intent on celebrating a performance at the back after the win.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Trossard said Arsenal owed the win to David Raya.

Raya produced the moment of the season for Arsenal so far, even if we are still very early on.

There were shades of David Seaman’s save against Sheffield United in the FA Cup in 2003, for those who are lucky enough to remember it, when Raya saved against Ollie Watkins.

Amadou Onana’s shot was deflected onto the Arsenal crossbar in the second half and Raya quickly jumped up after his first attempted save to deny Watkins – a magical moment.

And speaking after the game, Trossard said that Raya saved Arsenal on more than one occasion.

Trossard declared: “Amazing. Saves us a couple of times today. Showed us last week as well. Credit to him. He kept us in the game.”

Of course, it was former Arsenal player Emi Martinez, who has often frustrated his old side in the past, who then failed to keep out Thomas Partey’s strike to make it 2-0.

And if Raya was crucial in helping Arsenal to win, well Martinez didn’t help Villa’s cause on that rare occasion.

A momentous night for the Gunners, one that will build confidence ahead of the soon-to-come north London derby.

That being said, Gary Neville was simply amazed by a different Arsenal moment – an evening to celebrate for Arteta.
