Newcastle United have rebuffed initial interest from Liverpool in their teenage starlet Yankuba Minteh.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed Liverpool had Minteh on their radar due to his connections with Arne Slot.

Slot managed Minteh at Feyenoord last season in what was a successful year of development for the Gambian winger, who scored 10 goals in 27 Eredivisie games in Rotterdam whilst on loan from the Magpies.

Borussia Dortmund are also tracking the player’s progress, with Newcastle set to receive a considerable profit should they opt to sell.

Newcastle originally signed the player from Danish club OB last summer for a fee of around £6.8m (€8m), immediately sending him on loan to the Netherlands under Slot’s stewardship.

Minteh has four years remaining on his current deal at Newcastle.

Newcastle must figure out Minteh dilemma

Eddie Howe is eager to keep Minteh around the squad, particularly with the injury issues the Newcastle manager faced last season.

However, the difficulty for the club is that to keep some of their talismanic figures such as Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak whilst complying with Financial Fair Play, Minteh is among those who could have to be sold.

Newcastle could also lose Miguel Almiron, with Football Insider revealing on 21st June that the Paraguayan may have to be sold to the Saudi Pro League as a “sacrificial lamb” to recoup funds.

Minteh has scored three goals in six matches for the Gambia national team, for whom he is now a regular.

In other news, Celtic could close in on a deal to sign a Newcastle goalkeeper at Euro 2024.
