Rangers may be required to pay Aberdeen a seven-figure development fee for new signing Connor Barron.

That is according to Football Insider journalist and Scottish expert Daniel Bowers, speaking to Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.

Barron joined Rangers last week as a free agent after running his contract down at Aberdeen, as Philippe Clement and the recruitment staff at Ibrox rebuild the squad for a huge push in 2024-25.

However, Scottish rules state the 21-year-old midfielder’s transfer is subject to a potential tribunal to settle a development fee, which must be paid by the Gers as Aberdeen offered Barron a new contract, which the player rejected.

Rangers would take a hit to the finances if they now have to pay a fee of around £1million for Barron.

Football Insider [28 June] understandsthe club also in talks to bring fellow central midfielder Kenny McLean back north of the border for around £1m.

Rangers set to pay hefty development fee for Barron

Despite Aberdeen losing Barron to Rangers, which was anticipated since the Light Blues first surfaced with an interest, Bowers believes it was smart business by the Dons to offer the youngster a deal.

This process ensured the club were entitled to payment, with the clubs looking to agree a development fee before which the case would be sent to a tribunal.

Bowers pointed out an issue with a similar switch in the past, when Celtic signed Joe Ledley on a free transfer from Cardiff City and did not have to pay a development fee, but this was a cross-border deal as opposed to between two clubs in the same domestic competition for Barron.

Aberdeen are determined to recoup as much as possible for the player, who has come through the ranks to represent the Scotland Under-21s and make 86 senior appearances whilst at Pittodrie.

The case could be one which rolls on, as the two clubs are believed to be considerably far apart at present in their valuations of the development fee for Barron.

In other news, Keith Wyness says Rangers could end up playing at Murrayfield throughout the whole of next season.
