Ianis Hagi blew away the Romanian media after the Rangers star shone in the country’s 4-1 win against Cyprus on Monday.
The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes and grabbed an assist as Romania earned promotion as UEFA Nations League C Group 2 toppers on 18 November.
As one of the standout performers for the team, he earned rave reviews from national media, with GSP rating his performance 7 out of 10.
“With many good points, Ianis provided the assist for Romania’s 4th goal. Perhaps more, he deserves more, given the huge pressure of the name and, more recently, the number”, they wrote [19 November].
Meanwhile, ProSport [18 November] had more to say, throwing shade at Gers boss Philippe Clement for not playing Hagi enough at Ibrox and hailing the player’s assist as “spectacular”.
Their assessment read: “Ianis Hagi was started by Mircea Lucescu in the match with Cyprus, and took advantage of this opportunity and slapped Philippe Clement, the coach of Glasgow Rangers.
“The Romanian international played a good match at the National Arena and managed to provide a spectacular goal assist for Florinel Coman.”
Digi Sport [19 November] lauded the attacker’s “decisive” role in Romania’s fourth goal and branded him “integral”.
“Ianis Hagi was an integral player in the dispute at the National Arena. Ianis Hagi was decisive in the goal scored by Florinel Coman in the 83rd minute, after he crossed perfectly inside the box”, the Romanian broadcasters wrote.
Ianis Hagi slaps Philippe Clement as he dazzles away from Rangers
Hagi has clocked just 50 minutes of league action this season and as one of the biggest names in Romanian football, it is understandable why the media there are not pleased with Rangers.
However, the Light Blues hierarchy are more, if not as much, guilty than Clement for the former Genk player being frozen out at the club at the start of the season.
Hagi was notably left out of the first team for the first two months of the season due to a contract dispute.
He was only allowed back into the squad after sacrificing a wage-rise clause in his contract [Daily Record, 1 October].
A red card in his first game back in the team did not help Hagi’s hopes of clawing his way up the pecking order, although he also grabbed an assist that day.
Nevertheless, Derek Ferguson called out the Gers for their poor treatment of the Romania international, criticising them for wasting his two months.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have a trick up their sleeve to snap up this player for a minimal fee.
