Alison McConnell believes Philippe Clement being touted with the Belgium job could actually be good news for Rangers.
Clement has been under pressure at Ibrox for a number of weeks now after a slow start to the campaign, yet he has been linked with a surprise move to his homeland as national team boss [Daily Record, 18 November].
Having your manager poached during the season would usually be considered a setback, but journalist McConnell reckons it may work out for the best from the Gers’ perspective in what can be considered a twist.
Asked on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show [18 November] if the talk regarding Clement to Belgium could be a positive, McConnell said: “Without a doubt. There was a contract signed on the eve of the new season, but it’s been a very difficult opening.
“We’ve heard the same philosophy repeated in various press conferences, almost pleading for patience, for people to hang fire.
“But given where the team are at the minute, if it continues like this, there’s a decision for the Rangers board to make at some point. If someone else comes in [for Clement], it saves you that decision.”
Philippe Clement to Belgium could be best option for Rangers
It is worth pointing out that talk of Clement being one of the frontrunners for the Belgium job is still merely speculation at this stage.
Indeed, it was only recently Clement pointed out he signed a new contract earlier this year and said he sees Rangers as a long-term project.
However, if performances do not improve drastically over the next month or so, the Light Blues will surely accept that Clement is not the right man.
The problem then, of course, is the small matter of a pay-off, which the club probably will not be able to afford.
Should Belgium come along and take Clement, then, they will not only save the Gers a headache in that regard but will also have to pay a tidy compensation fee.
For now, Domenico Tedesco remains in the Belgium job. The moment that changes, though, you can expect the talk regarding Clement to ramp up a notch or two.
This is very much a case of watch this space.
In other Rangers news, a surprise Ryan Kent enquiry has emerged amid links to an Ibrox return.
