Stan Collymore has namedropped Rangers when explaining why England were almost forced into hiring Thomas Tuchel.

England announced the appointment of Tuchel on Wednesday (16 October), leading many supporters to query why an English coach wasn’t hired.

Collymore defended the decision to hire a foreign manager in a post on X in response to the news.

His post said: “£13,700 to do your Pro licence in England, today. In Spain, it’s around €2000. There are 2200 Spanish pro licence coaches. There are 200 English pro licence coaches. Look at the correlation between cost and coaching number.

“Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney all took jobs instead of doing 3 years at SGP. Why? Gerrard got £2.5m at Rangers, Lampard £1m Derby, Rooney $1m Washington. Fuentes, Spanish head coach coached Sevilla and Bilbao youth on around €30k then Alaves first team where he lasted 6 months on around €100k before being sacked.”

Steven Gerrard’s time at Rangers

It’s fair to say Steven Gerrard’s time at Rangers was a success. After all, he ended Rangers’ ten-year title drought in style, completing an invincible season while defeating rivals Celtic on two occasions.

In the same season, Rangers were able to reach the last 16 in the UEFA Europa League but fell to defeat against Bayern Leverkusen.

However, it’s probably also fair to say that he only ever got the job due to his name. Prior to his appointment, Gerrard had no real experience in management.

The same could be said about the likes of Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard who both landed their first jobs with Derby County.

Ultimately, his departure to Aston Villa in 2021 would prove to be the start of a dip for Rangers who have failed to win the league title since he left the club however rumours had been bubbling linking with him with a move back to the Gers that have since been silenced.

In other Rangers news, Rangers made a good offer to sign Brighton attacker Oscar Cortes, but the finances were out of their control
