Celtic could generate up to £100million if they can win their four Champions League home games and secure their place in the knockout rounds this season.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Scottish champions could start spending significantly more money if they manage to make it into the second phase of the competition.
Celtic lost 7-1 against Borussia Dortmund in their second group stage game on the back of their 5-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava in their opening fixture.
Brendan Rodgers’s side still have to make the trips to Atalanta, Dinamo Zagreb and Aston Villa in the competition, while they will face RB Leipzig, Club Brugge and Young Boys at home.
Celtic could secure knockout qualification with home victories
Although Borson suggested the Glasgow giants could continue to struggle away from home in the Champions League, he believes they could pick up results at Celtic Park.
“I think they can do it at home,” Borson told Football Insider.
“Let’s say they were able to win the four home games and get a couple of away draws. Is that enough to get them into the next phase of the Champions League?
“If they can get into the second phase of the Champions League and have won four home games, they will be close to generating £100million from the Champions League.
“If you can do that one season and then another to make it back-to-back seasons, you can start to spend quite a considerable amount more than they are currently spending on the wage bill.
“Then you can slowly start to build up. But I think it’s very hard for them because they have got a very disappointing domestic situation from a revenue perspective.
“It makes it incredibly difficult to compete with teams that are coming out of the big leagues. Dortmund being a good example of that.
“They are going to find it very hard to compete in the Aston Villa game away from home.
“Villa’s wage bill now I think is running at more than £200million, so it’s going to be a situation again where it’s three times bigger than Celtic.
“It’s going to be another very hard game.”
