Rangers have only earned £750,000 in Europa League prize money this season despite winning two of their opening three games in the competition.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider there is an “enormous” difference between a successful run in the Europa League compared to the Champions League.
Rangers are playing in European football’s second-tier competition after failing to make it through the qualifying rounds of the Champions League.
The Scottish giants have beaten Malmo and FCSB in two of their opening three games, while they suffered a defeat against Lyon at Ibrox.
Philippe Clement’s side currently sit 11th in the revamped 36-team league phase of the competition, with the top eight teams qualifying automatically for the knockout rounds and ninth to 24th taking part in a play-off.
Rangers won’t be able to match Champions League revenue
But Borson admitted any success they achieve in the Europa League still won’t make up for what they could have earned in the Champions League.
He told Football Insider: “There is nothing like the Champions League in terms of moving the dial.
“It’s a good example to look at what they are doing in the Europa League this season.
“They have won two games. The win is fine, but you only get €450,000 (£375,000).
“They have started well, but that’s only worth €900,00 (£750,000).
“If they were in the Champions League and they had won one game, they would be getting €2.1million (£1.8million) per game.
“The difference is enormous between the two competitions.
“A successful run in the Europa League just doesn’t compare at all to a Champions League run.”
