Dominic Calvert-Lewin has revealed a Premier League record for Everton is at the forefront of his mind amid intensified debate on his future.
The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract and has reportedly rebuffed efforts from the club to extend his current deal [Daily Mirror, 27 October].
Calvert-Lewin currently stands on 56 Premier League goals for the Toffees and needs 13 more to become the club’s all-time highest scorer in the competition, something he is keen to achieve.
In an internal club interview, as quoted in the Liverpool Echo [29 October], he said: “For me, I’m joint-third top scorer in the Premier League for Everton so I need 13 more goals at this moment in time to surpass Romelu [Lukaku].
“As you can see, I know a lot about that. That’s been something on my agenda from the start of the season – being Everton’s all-time highest scorer in the Premier League. For me, that would be a very, very proud achievement.”
Calvert-Lewin drops Everton future hint with goal target
Calvert-Lewin’s comments all seem geared towards wishing to stay at Everton, but his suggested actions are contradicting it, demonstrating he is keeping his options open.
The England man is level with Tim Cahill on Premier League goals in blue, but to surpass Duncan Ferguson and then Romelu Lukaku would likely take him beyond this season unless he hits a supreme spell of form in the coming months.
At 27, his next contract is career-defining and now well on his way to nine years at Goodison, he could be tempted to dip before the club make their exciting move across to Bramley-Moore Dock.
Calvert-Lewin can say all the right things to please the faithful, but was a matter of ink away from turning out for Newcastle United this season and is now the subject of interest from giants like Juventus, a tempting proposition for anyone [Corriere dello Sport, 17 October].
January is a crucial month for the striker’s camp and could dictate how the incoming Friedkin Group strategise their recruitment plans once their takeover is complete.
