Liverpool will continue taking “aggressive” action against ticket touting after handing out several lifetime bans.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Merseyside giants will be keen to ensure tickets are going to actual supporters after confirming they have no plans to develop Anfield further.
Liverpool announced on 31 October they have issued 75 lifetime bans and 136 indefinite suspensions, while also shutting down 100,000 fake ticketing accounts.
The club said most of the bans and suspensions related to “unauthorised selling of season tickets, memberships or hospitality tickets”.
In a warning to fans to only buy tickets through official channels, they said there had been an increase in the number of supporters being defrauded, particularly online.
Liverpool unlikely to extend Anfield capacity in next 20 years
Borson expects this to be the start of a trend as Premier League clubs aim to crack down on people profiteering from ticket sales.
He told Football Insider: “It’s hard to track these things, but I think where they can see clear evidence that people are skimming off tickets and selling them on the whole time, all the clubs are going to be quite aggressive on that.
“If you look at Liverpool, they have confirmed they have no current plans or ability to expand the stadium further, so we are probably now at the point where that’s it for Anfield.
“You would think it’s pretty unlikely in the next 20 years that Liverpool are going to decide to do a wholesale redevelopment of Anfield.
“That means they are fixed for quite a long time now on that capacity and that means they are going to be very careful about where those tickets end up.
“I think it’s going to be common across the game that people are going to be very tight on where those tickets end up to keep them where they should go.
“We have seen it at Arsenal and Man United have got various rules about the number of games that you need to go to.
“I think it will probably be the start of a trend that will try and get rid of people profiteering from ticket sales, certainly from season ticket sales.”
